ROGERSVILLE — The USPS Letter Carriers of Rogersville and Surgoinsville participated recently with fellow workers around the nation to make a big success of their 25th annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive.
On Saturday May 6th, letter carriers notified customers they would be picking up food donations for the hungry the following Saturday, May 13th.
This has become one of the largest food drives in the nation and is the primary source for the nation’s food pantries just before schools let out for the summer.
Locally, residents donated 3,650 pounds of food.
Many residents that have never experienced hardships don’t realize when school is out in the summer that children that have eaten at school bring their big appetites home. When translated into meager incomes, two, three or four children can strain a family’s decisions whether to pay bills or purchase groceries.
Food drives like the “Stamp Out Hunger” drive help keep food in food pantries to provide extra help to these families during summer vacation for their children.
Many food drives are distributed to Second Harvest who rations food back to area agencies. However, Rogersville and Surgoinsville residents should know that food donated locally is distributed back to Rogersville and Surgoinsville directly to the Of One Accord food pantries for neighbors in need
Of One Accord and other food pantry leaders offer their sincerest thanks for this timely food drive and the addition of much needed supplies to their pantry’s shelves.
