PHOTO GALLERY: Volunteer sweeps West Greene

Volunteer’s season opener — a pair of five-inning games starting at 1:30 p.m. — was pushed back a day because of Tuesday’s state tournament game involving the school’s basketball team.

In Wednesday’s first game, Austin Williams and Zach Justice each had a hit and drove in a run to lead the Falcons to a 7-5 win. Landon McIntosh threw 4 1/3 innings to earn the win. He gave up five earned runs and struck out five. Gavin Hickernell came on in relief and recorded two outs to earn the save.

In the second game, Volunteer got four innings of one-hit baseball from starter Peyton Steele to beat the Buffaloes 12-2. Steele gave up two runs (one earned) and struck out four. Colby Lawson went 1-for-2 and drove in three runs to lead Volunteer. Isaiah Bowery went 1-for-1 with two RBIs. Justice had a hit and an RBI.
