JONESVILLE — Volunteer's Lucas Armstrong defeated Abingdon's Robert Stallard in a sudden playoff at Cedar Hill Country Club Tuesday to take the top prize in the Farmers & Miners Invitational.

"He played a good, steady round the whole time," said Volunteer Head Coach Dennis Anderson of his number one.  "You have to keep it in play up there and he did.  He has played a tremendous amount of golf to prepare him for what he's doing.  He's worked hard at it," the Falcon head man added.  Armstrong dropped a four-foot par putt on the first playoff hole to secure the win.  "A lot of it is about technique and Lucas has that," said Anderson.  Through the regulation 18 holes Armstrong and Stallard had each shot a 73, 37 on the front nine and 36 on the back.

Volunteer's Justin Wright fought off three double bogies to finish tied for seventh overall with a 76.  "I'm really proud of Justin Wright," said Anderson.  "If he had just been able to bogie those holes we would have had a three-way playoff for first.

The Falcons' team score, however, wasn't quite where Anderson would have liked, coming in at 331, fourth in the AA/AAA Division behind Tennessee High's 306, Abingdon's 308 and Daniel Boone's 324.  "We're going to have to have better three and four scores to compete in our conference," said Anderson, who saw his team face off with the tops from the league after press time Thursday when Volunteer met Dobyns-Bennett and Science Hill.

Taylor Haygood supplied Volunteer with an 88 Tuesday at the Farmers & Miners while Tyler Armstrong shot a 94.  Thomas Morrison's round was not needed for team scoring.

"It was a really nice day," Anderson said of the conditions at Cedar Hill.  "The greens were a little inconsistent, but the  people treated us real well."

Thomas Walker's Graham Clouse was third with a 74.  Jordan Patrick of Abingdon, Grant Marshall of Castlewood and Jace Devault of Tennessee High all shot a 75.  Clouse won fourth place in a playoff.  Marshall took fifth.

In all, 17 schools posted team scores in two divisions.  Powell Valley's 326 was tops in the A Division.  Volunteer's 331 was the fifth lowest score among all teams taking part in the Farmers & Miners.  In all, 92 individuals competed.
