ROGERSVILLE - As the primary election season heats up Rogersville city officials want to remind candidates where they can and, more importantly, can't place campaign signs. "Under our ordinance political and campaign signs are limited to private property. An individual can put up the sign but candidates can't just put them out on the right of way," City Recorder Bill Lyons said. Following the June 2009 Rogersville municipal election the board discussed the sign ordinance and limitations on the location of campaign signs. "We all broke it (the sign ordinance)," Mayor Jim Sells noted during the July Board of Mayor and Alderman meeting. City Attorney Bill Phillips said the ordinance carries a penalty of $50 per day per violation. According to Lyons, rather than issuing a fine city it is more likely city workers will simply collect any signs located on city owned or controlled property. "We will probably pick them up and take them to the city garage. If a candidate wants to come get them they can, otherwise we will dispose of them," the recorder added.
