KINGSPORT - Dobyns-Bennett dominated the inside and held sophomore standout Ashley Lindholm to six points en route to a 64-46 Big 8 win over Volunteer Saturday at the Buck Van Huss Dome.
"We didn't play very well," said Volunteer coach Jerry Myers. "We played hard, but we didn't play well. We made a few mistakes and didn't shoot very well."
The Lady Indians scored layups and putbacks on the offensive end, and kept Volunteer from the offensive glass, in building a 31-20 halftime lead behind Julie Osborne's eight, first-half points.
Lindholm was frustrated by the stingy D-B defense, held to just one basket.
"The way they play their defense, they play more of a helping defense than a pressure defense," Myers said of the clamp on Lindholm. "Everytime she would beat her man, there would be two right there to help.
"But that's the way you do it. They did that to all of us. Anytime any of us beat our man, they were right there."
Volunteer (4-7, 1-4) couldn't get much going in the second half against the first-place Lady Indians (10-3, 4-0).
"D-B did a good job. They have a good team," Myers said. "We had good effort and had some balanced scoring. We had different people contribute and played unselfishly, p layed hard. Some people played better than they had been. We'll try and build on that."
Megan Devine's 15 points led the Lady Indians, which got 14 from Osborne and 13 from Haley Clark, including one three-pointer.
Volunteer was led by Katie McFarland and Jessie O'Dell, who had 10 points apiece. Laiken Gilliam had nine and Lindholm six.
