FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Rogersville's J.P. Arnold ron the the
silver medal in the 1,650-yard freestyle at the recent AT&T United States Swimming National
Championships in Federal Way, Wash.
Arnold posted a lifetime best time of
15:05.21 in finishing second to American record-holder and Olympic gold medalist, Peter
Vanderkay.
Arnold was competing as part of the U.S. Olympic Development
Team representing SwimMac Carolina, based in Charlotte.
In addition to
winning the Team National Championship, the SwimMac Carolina squad just returned from a competitive
training trip to Italy at the invitation of the Italian government.
Arnold,
a member of the United States National Swim Team, first garnered local attention as a member of the
Rogersville Flying Fish swim team, and later as a high school All-American swimmer at Dobyns-Bennett
High School.
After completing his freshman year on the University of
Georgia Swim Team, Arnold elected to concentrate on swimming in international
competition.
He is currently training with Auburn coaching legend and
current director of the U.S. Olympic Development Program, David Marsh, in
Charlotte.
