ROGERSVILLE - Most people
probably do not want to go to jail, but Sunday is your chance to pay a brief visit to the county's
new one - and several hundred visitors did just that. County employees and
jail inmates will begin moving into the new Hawkins County Justice Center complex next week.
Everyone was invited to a sneak peak at the entire Justice Center during an open house from 1 to 4
p.m. Jan. 17, County Mayor Crockett Lee said. The Justice
Center complex, located in the former Kmart building, contains a new jail as well as administrative
space for the Hawkins County Sheriff's office, with the entrance to that section on the eastern end
of the building. Courtrooms and office space for Circuit, General Sessions and Juvenile
Courts will also be located in the facility on the western end of the structure.
Architect Tony Moore reported the facility has received a certificate of occupancy from the
Tennessee Fire Marshal's office at a Tuesday meeting of the county's Building
Committee. Circuit Court Clerk Holly Jaynes said the move will mean her office
and the Juvenile Services office will be closed Jan. 20 through Jan. 22. General Sessions
Court is, however, is still scheduled for Jan. 20, she noted. "We have a lot
of things to move. As part of the move our computers will be down so the office will have to
be closed," Jaynes explained. The HCSO administrative offices will continue to
operate during the move from the current jail complex to the new facility, a department
representative said.
