SNEEDVILLE — A customer inside Greene’s IGA, in Sneedville, was injured when a vehicle, driven by a local man, acidentally plowed through the front of the store when the driver mistakenly hit the gas instead of the brakes.

Officials said that the accident happened at 10:47 a.m. on Friday, May 31, 2019.

The 2018 Kia Sorento, driven by Harry G. Ebert, 87, of Sneedville, ran through the front door and plate glass windows, travelling several feet into the building, knocking over several displays and taking out a structural support pole near the cash registers.

The vehicle also sustained damage.

Ebert, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured.

The injured customer — Noel Peacock, 58, of Tazewell, was transported by Hancock Co. Ambulance to Hancock Co. Hospital — was struck from behind, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, which investigated the mishap. His condition was not known at presstime.

Also on scene were Sheriff Brad Brewer and deputies with the Hancock Co. Sheriff’s Office.

No charges were filed, the THP report said.

“I’m just thankful there weren’t more people coming in or out, or standing in that part of the store,” Sheriff Brewer said, noting that on the last Friday of the month, the local food store is usally extremely busy around that time of the day. “It could have been a lot worse.”
