SURGOINSVILLE — Abigail Haynes, of Surgoinsville, will join other outstanding students from across the state this summer in a unique academic and career-oriented development experience, The National Youth Leadership Forum: Pathways to STEM, taking place in Winston-Salem, NC.

The program is part of the Envision family that allows students to explore their interests and experience learning beyond the classroom.

Abby, who will be a fifth grader at Surgoinsville Middle when school starts back in the fall, will be only the third ever from Surgoinsville Elementary chosen to go to the forum. Abby said she is thrilled to be nominated for the program and thanked Cindy Childress for the nomination.

Abby ranks high in her class and enjoys reading. She especially enjoyed a school program in which she read to kindergarten students. Abby also loves animals, basketball, dancing, music and snowboarding.

The acclaimed program motivates students in an environment designed to challenge assumptions, meet new people, and grow, a spokesperson said.

The program, the spokesperson said, helps students to “build the confidence and skills needed to excel in the classroom while gaining exposure to STEM fields and concepts”.
