SNEEDVILLE — It was a ton of fun, it was both hilariously funny and deadly serious out on the court as six teams took to the floor on Saturday, June 29, in the Hancock Co. Rescue Squad’s “Badges for Kids” basketball tournament.
Captain Tony Seal with the Hancock County Rescue Squad said that several local first-responder agencies — along with other volunteers and even some children — came together to raise money for the Christmastime “Shop With A Cop” program, whereby money is provided for needy children to go gift shopping with a local law enforcement officer.
Every penny raised will go toward the purchase of gifts for children who might otherwise receive no presents at Christmas, Seal said.
“We just feel like its a good thing to do,” Seal said. “These kids can’t help their circumstances and its real hard on these little ones to not have anything at Christmas.”
Teams included not only first responders but local elected officials and area youth.
Sneedville Vol. Fire Department won the opening round against Treadway VFD, 48-19.
In Game Two, the Hancock Co. Ambulance Service took a 47-41 win over the Sheriff’s Department, followed by Game Three, between Vardy-Blackwater VFD and the Rescue Squad, with VBVFD winning that match, 29-18.
The three victorious teams then took to the court at the Hancock Co. High School Gym in ‘playoffs’, with Sneedville VFD winning the final match against VBVFD.
A crowd of about 250 attended the event which raised more than $650 for the Christmastime event.
