PENNINGTON GAP, Virginia — John Curtis Marion, age 76, of Pennington Gap, Virginia, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, May 12, 2019.

He was born on September 4, 1942, in Hancock County, Tennessee. John graduated from Hancock County High School in 1959, and he later attended Carson Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee, and Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee. He graduated from the University of Tennessee School of Pharmacy in 1967.

After graduating from pharmacy school, John was employed at The Drug Shop in Pennington Gap, Virginia, and he later became the owner and operator of John C. Marion Pharmacist, P.C., in Pennington Gap, where he continued working until his passing. John also operated a family farm in Dryden, Virginia, where he spent countless hours farming and tending to the land he loved. John was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pennington Gap. He loved farming, spending time with his beloved family and cheering on the University of Tennessee Volunteers.

John served several terms as a member of the Pennington Gap Town Council, two terms as Mayor of Pennington Gap and he also served as a member of the Lee County School Board for 16 years. He proudly served several years as a board member for Lee County Community Hospital. John was a 50-year member of the New Castle, Indiana Masonic Lodge #91 and a 50-year member of the Miles Lodge #165 of Pennington Gap. He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, Royal Arch Mason, Knights Templar and Shriner.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Reverend Henry Lee Marion and Emma Marion, and his brother, D. Allen Marion.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Janet Marion; two daughters: Jacqui Hobbs and husband Tim, and Jannesah Marion; grandchildren: Alethia Brewer and husband Justin, Shannes Marion and Hayden Hobbs; great-grandchildren: Levi Brewer, Lillian Brewer, Brently Brewer and Atticus Brewer; four siblings: Terry Marion, Brenda Chriswell and husband Floyd, Fred Marion and wife Judy, and Dale Marion and wife Jackie; one brother-in-law: Doug Smith and wife Rachel; and a host of other friends, family and loved ones.

A funeral service was held at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at the Sturgill Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, Virginia, with Pastor Josh Osteen officiating. Visitation was from 5:00 p.m. Wednesday until the time of the service. A graveside service was held at 12:00 p.m. Thursday, May 16, 2019, at the Powell Valley Cemetery in Dryden, Virginia.

Pallbearers were Jonathan Marion, Fredrick Marion, Sheriff Gary Parsons, Gary Brown, Ron McCoy, Seth Haynes, John Haynes and Marc Cheek, and Honorary Pallbearers were Birg Sergent, Edgar Paul Fannon and Johnny Woliver.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to First Baptist Church of Pennington Gap, Virginia, and/or Samaritan’s Purse and/or Shriner’s Hospital.
