Joseph T. Walker, Jr., age 87 of
Surgoinsville, died Saturday, January 30, 2010 at Bristol Regional Medical Center following a brief
illness.
Mr. Walker was retired from the U.S. Government having been employed
at the National Institutes of Health.
He was a member of Rogersville
First United Methodist Church.
Mr. Walker was a World War II veteran having
served in the U.S. Navy. Having enlisted prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor, Mr. Walker was
part of the battles at Normandy, Southern France, Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
He was a member of Forest City Lodge No. 381 A.F. & A.M. Forest City, North Carolina,
Hasson Chapter No. 179 Order of Eastern Star, Shriner and was a 32 Degree Scottish Rite Mason.
He was a member of American Legion Post #105, Bethesda, Maryland where he was instrumental in
forming the American Legion Baseball program.
He was preceded in death
by his parents, Joseph T. and Mamie Lowdermilk Walker, Sr.; four sisters and two
brothers.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Margaret A. Walker of the
home; daughters, Patricia Jean Williams of Richmond, Virginia and Catherine Newport and
husband, John of Damascus, Maryland; sons, Joseph T. Walker, III and wife Pamela of Huntingtown,
Maryland and William C. Walker of Surgoinsville; 12 grandchildren, six great grandchildren; brother,
Charles M. Walker and wife, Jane of Forest City, North Carolina; several nieces and
nephews.
Calling hours will be 1 to 3 p.m., Friday, February 5, 2010 at Broome
Funeral Home, Rogersville. Funeral service will be conducted 3 p.m., Friday, February 5, 2010
in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Gerald Jones officiating. A graveside service will be
conducted 3 p.m., Monday, February 22, 2010 at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington,
Virginia.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Rogersville
