JACKSON -- At the request of 29th District Attorney General Danny Goodman, TBI Agents are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in the early morning hours on January 1st in Newbern, Tennessee, that resulted in two police officers and one civilian being injured.
The shooting happened around 3 a.m. at Douglas Café (aka “Betty’s”) at 114 Smith Street in Newbern. Initial reports indicate two officers with the Newbern Police Department responded to a disturbance call at the club around closing time, where a New Year’s Eve party was taking place. When officers arrived at the scene, shots were being fired, and the two officers were shot, as well as another individual at that location. Both officers and the civilian have been transported to Regional One Medical Center in Memphis for treatment. Their specific conditions are not available at this time.
The TBI Violent Crimes Response Team is responding to the scene to collect evidence and document the scene. TBI Special Agents and Forensic Scientists will gather any and all relevant interviews and evidence as part of this ongoing investigation. Throughout the process, Agents will submit investigative findings to the District Attorney General for his review and consideration. The TBI does not identify officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective department.
Updates on this investigation will be posted online at TBINewsroom.com as they are available.
